ENTRIES NOW OPEN – New Zealand’s Best Hot Cross Bun Competition 2026
Entries are now open for the annual New Zealand’s Best Hot Cross Bun Competition, celebrating craftsmanship, consistency, and the tradition behind one of Aotearoa’s most iconic seasonal bakes.
This blind-judged national competition recognises technical excellence across the baking industry and provides bakeries with the opportunity to showcase their work on a national stage. Media coverage may be present during judging.

Entry Rules
Category: Traditional Fruit Hot Cross Buns
Eligibility: Open to all commercial bakeries in New Zealand
Entries: One entry per bakery
Awards: Gold, Silver, and Bronze awarded to the top entries
Requirements:

Six (6) identical hot cross buns per entry

Traditional fruit and spice formulation

Batch baked
-
Buns must be crossed and may be glazed

Maximum combined weight: 900g for all six buns

Delivered in plain, unbranded packaging

Outer box must be clearly labelled with bakery name, contact details, and entry number

An A5 product description card must be included (no logos, names, or branding)

No identifying marks on the buns themselves – blind judging applies

Products must be delivered fully cooled
Entries received after 6:00pm Wednesday 4 March will not be accepted.
Judging Criteria
Presentation
Uniform size, clean finish, neat crosses, and professional appearance.
Technical
Correct bake, even fruit distribution, consistent structure, and proper moulding.
Eating Profile
Balanced spice, well-conditioned fruit, soft crumb, and clean flavour profile.
Important Notes
By entering, bakeries consent to photography, filming, and the use of images for promotional purposes.
The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
